Soka University of America is currently seeking qualified candidates for a part-time Stage Manager position for the Soka Performing Arts Center.

The Stage Manager aids in the implementation and execution of producing live events within the venue working under the direct supervision of the Production Manager, and the oversight of the General Manager. The Stage Manager will provide support leading up to and day of show for all events, acting as Primary Stage Manager, executing specific show requirements, and directing and supervising production staff while ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.

Having the ability and willingness to work collegially is essential, as is an understanding of an interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum.

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Respond to work calls made by the Production Manager.
  2. Provide general support for all stage and backstage needs of artists, including set-up, operation, and strike, for assigned events in the Soka Performing Arts Center. This may include music concerts, recitals, dance/theatre productions, film screenings, meetings, and/or classes.
  3. Act as primary Stage Manager, including:
    1. Prepare venue for the arrival of performers, including the stage area, dressing rooms, and loading dock.
    2. Schedule set up and show call shifts for Student PA crew as directed by Production Manager.
    3. Lead the check-in and load-in of arriving artists and performers.
    4. Create Dailies for each event as directed by Production Manager & Internal Events Manager.
    5. Lead stage crew and delegate tasks to them during assigned rehearsals, performances, and events.
    6. Interact with artists and their technical staff, licensee clients and staff, university staff, and student performers in the planning and execution of events.
    7. Execute and call show cues as required.
    8. Demonstrate a professional and friendly working rapport with artists, licensee clients, university staff, and students.
    9. Ensure stage, sound, and lighting preparations are complete prior to handing the house over to the House Manager.
    10. Ensure all production cues and stage entrances/exits are executed in a safe, appropriate, and timely manner.
    11. Assist performers in load-out and departure from the facility.
    12. Complete an SM report after each event, when necessary.
  4. Create and maintain a safe and pleasant working environment for staff and customers at all times.
  5. Occasionally fill other technical positions as assigned, such as FOH ushering, video directing, lighting, and audio.
  6. Assist in training and supervising Production Assistants when on call.
  7. Attend backstage staff orientations and meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Degree from a four (4) year college or university in a job-related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience

At least 2 years of Stage Management experience with demonstrated competency required.

Demonstrated proficiency in stage management for the performing arts.

Experience working in a university setting preferred.

Competencies/Skills

Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Advanced knowledge of stage management, and basic understanding of other aspects of technical theatre (video directing, lighting, sound, and ushering).

Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to provide customer service to diverse constituencies.

Discipline to work independently, as well as within a team.

Ability to perform duties in a fast-paced environment, within a strict schedule.

A strong understanding of safety issues associated with working in a theatrical setting.

Computer proficiency and knowledge of standard office software.

The anticipated rate for this position is $24.00 – $29.00 per hour and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
